A little bit of research…

Our kettle broke so I was on the lookout for something to replace it. I stumbled upon the idea of a hot water tap style dispenser and I quite liked the idea of only heating up the water that you need rather that a full kettle every time. We only use our kettle for drinks, and our hectic family lifestyle often means that my husband and I don’t ever get to enjoy a hot drink at the same time- so this seemed like a perfect choice!

Looking what was out there, it was clear there is wide variety of choice on the market- some top of the range products like the BIBO Classic hot water dispenser, which looks snazzy and does the job, but is nearly £500! And there are more mainstream products available on the high-street with a much more reasonable price tag like the Breville VKJ142 HotCup Water Dispenser (£49) and Morphy Richards 131004 Redefine Hot Water Dispenser (£150).

I liked both of these products, but £150 was a little out of budget and despite almost going for the £45 Breville VKJ142, I noticed it didn’t have variable dispense settings and black wouldn’t fit so well in our kitchen- so I finally decided on the silver Breville HotCup with Variable Dispenser VKT111.

First impressions of the Breville HotCup VKT111

A quick click and collect from Argos the day before and I was opening our new Breville HotCup Dispenser before I knew it! I was very impressed with the look- it is a really classy silver and looks very expensive on the kitchen surface. And what’s even better, it definitely takes up less space than the kettle I had. I’m no good at realising dimensions on websites, but I did assume it would take up more room- I was wrong!

It’s a quick plug in and get started type of setup, which suited me just fine! I filled up the water tank and was ready to go. There are clear min and max levels so you know how much water to put in, and it will hold up to 2 litres, so it won’t constantly need filling up (which is good as our dispenser is nowhere near the sink!). Chose the setting pre-amount and it took about 30 seconds to boil and pour the water for my first cup.

The good part is the water comes out super-hot, so makes a lovely cuppa. The annoying part is it took me a little while to get used to the different water settings for my different mug sizes. There is a stop button though, which is good to limit spillages! However, I have definitely got used to it now and I can work it perfectly!

After serving up, I was able to place the basket and bowl directly into the dishwasher and therefore had no hassle, no mess, no cooking smells and no oil changing- which was always the dreaded part of cooking chips in my old deep fryer!
A few tips that I will mention – when serving the food, don’t tip the basket upside down with the bowl part attached, as residual oil may fall onto the food – place the bowl on a mat then just press the release button near the handle, and the basket will detach itself for easy serving.

It was just as easy to bake, grill and roast, although a little more time was required to work out the cooking times but I soon got the hang of it!

After use, I wiped the appliance down and the cord fitted neatly back into the appliance for storage back in my cupboard.

What we love about the Breville HotCup with Variable Dispenser VKT111

Looks glam, but doesn’t get in the way: Like I already said, it looks super nice in silver and better looking than most higher-end products. Also at H29xW19xD25 cm’s, it isn’t overpowering on the kitchen surface.

Quick and easy: Just press the button at the top and the hot water will dispense in seconds. There is also a stop button to stop spills. This makes it an excellent choice for people who might struggle to lift or pour a hot kettle safely.

Variable settings: Maybe a key selling point- there are 11 different volume settings which you can adjust using a turn button- and can be different for each cup. You can chose from 140ml to 300ml which means it can also be used to prepare snack etc too! The drip tray can also be moved to suit the cup/bowl you are filling up.

Economical: The Breville HotCup will only boil the water you need for your single cup, so you will only use the minimum energy required- unlike repeatedly boiling a full kettle. This helps the environment, but also helps keeps your bills down too!

Some cons with the Breville HotCup with Variable Dispenser VKT111

No guarantee: Unlike most bigger brands, this does not come with a guarantee. Something worth mentioning.

Settings need some practice: As I have said, it takes a little while to get used to the different settings- but the stop button limits the mess until you get the hang of it!

Final Verdict on the Breville HotCup

I like this piece of equipment and it fits in perfectly with what we need. Across the internet, it is generally being rated 4+ out of 5 stars, so lots of people like this product too.

It is fast, quiet and looks good on the worktop. I like the variable setting and is why I chose this over some cheaper models- I didn’t realise we used so many different mug sizes so it’s great for that. The boiling water also makes a great cuppa- and I’ve had no complaints from my visitors!

It might have a slightly higher price tag to similar models, but I think it’s worth it to get that indulgent look. I would highly recommend this to people who are looking for kettle replacement that’s both economical and quality.
