A Little Bit Of Research…

Our garden is on the smaller side, and for the last few months I have been trying to find something fun to buy that would entertain our 3-year-old daughter. Especially as we are expecting our second this summer, so having something entertaining for a toddler to do without leaving the house was definitely on the to-do list!

I spent ages researching into trampolines (which were too big), Wendy houses (which were all a bit “plastic-y” for my liking) and climbing frames/playhouses. Our daughter loves slides and climbing, but as I said, we are somewhat restricted with space!

After researching different brands, Smoby seemed to be a very popular choice. However, looking into the range of models like the Smoby House on Stilts, I felt the options seemed quite childish and whilst it might have been ok for my daughter to play on for a few months, I did feel like she would outgrow these quite quickly (height of the slide, unable to modify). And they seemed quite expensive too! It was when I was looking at these, I stumbled upon the TP Wooden Multiplay Playhouse on Argos- I had almost dismissed wooden frames as all the companies I found seemed quite bespoke and pricey, but this one was perfect- Great reviews and a great price!

First Impressions

The TP wooden multiplay playhouse is sturdy and my little girl absolutely loves it! It hardly takes up any space in our garden and because it’s wooden, we have adapted to make bespoke for our little one- adding extra bits to make it that extra bit special.

It’s been in the garden for a few months now, and after watching my daughter and her friends playing on it, we are so happy with our decision and now understand why it is so highly rated!

Delivery of the TP Playhouse

After waiting a few days for delivery (which you’re charged for), the parcel comes in 3 sections- 2 heavy boxes with the wood panel and the slide.

I’m glad my husband was in when it arrived as it would have been too heavy for me to carry on my own! And just a word of warning, the slide is in see through packaging, so I had to be clever to hide it from my excited toddler!

Assembly of the TP Wooden Multiplay Playhouse

On the website it says it will only take a couple of hours to put the playhouse together, but unfortunately this wasn’t the case for us! My husband and dad worked on it together and I would say it took about 4-5 hours for them to assemble. The instructions are clear, but it’s definitely a two man job.

Tools needed: Saw, spanner, screwdriver and a spirit level (if you’re picky!)

The instructions start the assembly with the base and structure, then platform, sides, ladder and finally finishing with the roof. You can see the build phasing according to the manual:

There are lots of fixings needed for the build (all provided), which again reinforces the sturdiness of the playhouse and despite some of the pillars feeling a little flimsy and slim in construction, once fitted correctly and fixed in, they aren’t going anywhere!

One thing to mention that you may find a little strange (at least my husband did), was before putting on the slide, you have to saw away the panel on the treehouse first. I’m no expert in wooden house construction, but it felt like a strange thing to have to do (when they could have just supplied a smaller panel?). Anyway…

Little extras for our little one

As you can guess, I am a fan of the TP Wooden Multiplay Playhouse, and a big reason is because it gives you the option to customise. With that in mind I spent some time making it special for our little girl but adding some little extras:

Paint it a colour they love: To preserve the playhouse for that little bit longer, we decided to paint the treehouse. She chose a lovely purple colour and even helped us to paint it!

Blackboard: To give her some activities to play in the treehouse, we put up a wooden board on one of the panels and painted it with blackboard paint- now she has her own little chalkboard to play with and absolutely loves it!

Something fun underneath: The TP wooden multiplay playhouse comes with a sand-pit cover to go underneath- I could see that some people have chosen a sand-pit to go underneath which looks great. However, as we have Astroturf in our garden, my husband wasn’t happy with the idea of a load of sand/mud underneath- so instead I decided to put up some curtains to make a little home. I got some material, curtain wire and hemming tape (the easy iron on one!) and made some curtains. Our daughter now has her own little private picnics with her toys and it’s much more fun with her curtains closed so mummy and daddy can’t see in!

Climbing wall: I also bought some MDF and bolt on climbing holds with the idea of building a climbing wall instead of the ladder, but she’s enjoying it as it is at the moment so I will leave that for when she’s a bit older.

Fairy lights: I have bought some fairy lights to put on the roof- I’ll sort that out when the weather is a bit nicer!

Other things to mention about the TP wooden multiplay playhouse

Our Verdict

If you’re looking for a playhouse that’s great value for money, great quality and safe for your little one, then look no further! This is a solid structure but very compact in size, so won’t dominate your garden either.

I’m very happy with our purchase and would happily recommend to others as a great choice for their little ones. And the most important thing- our daughter absolutely loves it and stays entertained for hours!

I’m hoping that this will be used for a few years and the wooden frame makes it very easy to modify so she won’t get bored! All we need now is for the rain to go away…
